Youth Exploitation, the event by Speak Safe
Marlene Capra is the Founder and Executive Director of SpeakSAFE: Save Adolescents from Exploitation that aims to fund and implement a collaborative approach to provide preventative education on human trafficking and exploitation of youth in the Bay Area. In addition to managing all aspects of the program, Marlene personally conducts trainings in conjunction with a youth team, many of whom are survivors of abuse. Both in person and on social media, they present on exploitation and the victimization of youth and what support is needed to encourage them to find their voices and come forward, enabling them to find assistance and healing. Through this forum, survivors have mobilized their voices in partnership to make lasting change while working together on this initiative. Hence, SpeakSAFE.
Marlene will be discussing what is exploitation/human trafficking, what does this really mean?
We will talk about our prevention work in Marin and the Bay Area, and how this crime affects
the health of our youth and families in our county. More importantly we will touch on what
“we” can do to protect those in our community and those we know and love.

Youth Exploitation is happening in every city and state, it does not favor a certain zip code or economic background, race, gender, or age in Marin County and neighboring counties. Many of us don’t realize that sextortion crimes are on the rise and the percentage of boys exploited is increasing. Less than 1% of exploited youth will ever disclose that they have been exploited, unaware they are even a victim. Yet 54% will report to a trusted adult in their life. Come join us and learn how we can all be that trusted adult in a young person’s life no matter what our role is.
Discussion:
• What does exploitation/human trafficking really mean?
• How is it happening and where?
• How does it go under the radar and unnoticed for so long?
• How can the vulnerabilities of our youth be used to exploit them?
• Who is involved and affected by this?
• What can you do to build protective factors into a young person’s life.
Everyone is welcome; parents/caregivers, middle & high school youth, and community members.
Refreshments will be provided.

Advancing Equity Through Collaboration: Human Trafficking and Sexual Assault
Since the 2000 passing of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), many organizations who previously had little or no interest in forced labor and who had otherwise held no anti-oppression principles realized the value of the anti-trafficking momentum to further their own agendas. Because of this, many anti-trafficking organizations claiming values of survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and empowerment-based programming engaged in coercive intervention and other strategies that did not center the consent and bodily autonomy of survivors. Additionally, many components of these strategies rely on policing tactics that place people from marginalized communities (including trans people, immigrants, and BIPOC) at increased risk of harm through engagement with the criminal justice system, target vulnerable sex workers, and do not address the root causes that leave people in the sex trades without access to safety and support.
“End Demand” has been a popular part of the anti-trafficking narrative since it’s early days, and “Demand Reduction” prioritized as a “prevention” strategy. Meanwhile, demand reduction has been criticized by labor rights organizers as antithetical to the labor organizing practices that can keep workers safe (working together, increased screening, organizing for safety), and by anti-trafficking advocates for its incongruence with what is shown to reduce exploitation in other forms of labor. This presentation will contextualize the framing of shared values and collaborations between SA and HT organizations, within the history of the passing of the TVPA. It will then offer profiles for seven common typologies of engagement, with concrete strategies for how to engage with each to further a human rights, harm reduction approach.
